SACM student showcase opera collaboration. UCT Opera School, in collaboration with Cape Town Opera, presents Monteverdi - Orfeo. Conductor: Erik Dippenaar Director and Designer: Jaco.  Bouwer Associate Director: Magdalene Minnaar Choreography: Ina Wichterich Lighting Design: Wolf Britz Award-winning director and designer Jaco Bouwer (Balbesit, Rooiland, Samsa-Masjien) makes his Cape Town Opera debut with the first African production of Monteverdi's haunting Orpheus, the earliest operatic work which has retained a place in the international canon. Created with collaborators Magdalene Minnaar, Ina Wichterich and Wolf Britz, Bouwer's production traces Orpheus' descent into darkness as he searches the underworld for his departed wife, Euridice. Erik Dippenaar leads a cast of young singers from the UCT Opera School and Cape Town Opera through Monteverdi's achingly beautiful score, accompanied by the Baroque instrumental ensemble, Camerata Tinta Barocca. The Laura Searle Prize for Piano Concerto Playing (final round). This is the thirteenth edition of the Laura Searle Prize for Piano Concerto Playing, which is open to all piano students at the South African College of Music. Part of the prize is to perform with the UCT Symphony Orchestra in 2017. Prices: R65 / UCT Staff: R60 Senior citizens and students: R50 / Learners: R40 UCT students with a valid student card: free at the door. Book at Computicket or at the door.

The Robert Andrews Prize (final round): candidates must present a single work, or movement(s) from a work composed in the last hundred years by a composer from the Southern Hemisphere. The James de Villiers Prize (final round): a prize for the best performance of a Romantic work The Lionel Bowman Prize for Beethoven Playing (final round): This competition is open to all piano students at the SACM and the prize-winner's recital will take place in 2017. Admission is by donation at the door. Please note the early starting time for these competitions.
