Dr Shannon Morreira, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Humanities Education Development Unit, has been presented with the 2017 Award for Outstanding Research by a Young Scholar by the Faculty of Humanities Research committee. The Award is for her paper, Steps Towards Decolonial Higher Education in Southern Africa? Epistemic Disobedience in the Humanities, published in the Journal of Asian and African Studies (Sage).

This seminar will engage in recent conversations around the world in the social sciences and public sphere concerning the topics of Islam and Decoloniality. It will be a brief introduction to various intellectual and political currents in the Muslim world and its diasporas that deal with Muslim approaches to decolonizing knowledge, power and being.   Wednesday, 18 October 2017 Time: 13:00 – 14:00pm Venue: LS 5.67 (Religious Studies seminar room)   by Mr Alexander Abbasi PhD Candidate, Department of Religious Studies, University of Johannesburg Alexander Abbasi is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Religion Studies, University of Johannesburg. He is an Arab-American Muslim scholar activist whose work lies at the crossroads of Islamophobia Studies, Islamic Liberation Theology and Decolonial Theory.
