Access to Major Equipment

To use any of the Unit's instruments, you must be a registered user. To enquire about registering, contact Miranda Waldron. Alternatively, the Unit may be able to undertake contract work for you.

TEM

The Unit has three transmission electron microscopes available for staff and student use: The FEI F20 CRYO FEGTEM, the FEI T20 TEM and the Zeiss EM 912 CRYO EFTEM. The instruments can be booked in advance for as long as is required for a particular experiment subject to user demand at that particular time. The Unit offers training in the operation of these instruments.

SEM

The Unit has two scanning electron microscopes available for staff and student use: The Leo 1450 and the FEI NovaNano SEM. The 1450 is equipped for energy dispersive x-ray analysis. The Nova NanoSEM is a high resolution FEG SEM, equipped with an EBSD system, Energy Dispersive x-ray analysis and STEM Detector . The instruments can be booked in advance for as long as is required for a particular experiment subject to user demand at that particular time. The Unit offers training in the operation of these instruments.

Ultramicrotomy

The Unit has a Reichert FCS Cryo Ultramicrotome available for staff and student use. See Lecture 2 of the Microscopy for Biologists for training information.

Sale of EM Consumables

The Centre offers a wide range of standard EM preparative consumables for sale to users. There is a price list of the more common items - please ask about other things which you feel we should stock.

Training courses in aspects of microscopy

The Unit is without doubt the prime intellectual resource for Biological electron microscopy in South Africa. The Centre offers a very broad range of expertise in relevant modern areas, and offers a one week honours course - "Introduction to Microscopy for Biologists" - and a seven week course in Structural Biology covering cryo-TEM and 3D image reconstruction. Significant one-on-one training is also offered by the Centre.

Collaboration and Partnership in research utilizing EM

The Centre for Imaging and Analysis occasionally undertakes research in collaboration with research partners. The over-ruling criterion for this to happen is that an EM officer should find the work interesting and have some motivation to undertake the work. In these cases the Centre will usually bear much of the cost of instrument usage and EM related consumables from a budget that it has available for this purpose.

Contract work

The Centre for Imaging and Analysis has a limited capacity to undertake contract work for people and organizations inside and outside the University. We welcome enquiries about this service, please phone (021) 650 2817/8/9 or fax us at (021) 689 1528.
