Honours Alumni

In Memoriam: Asha Barron

We mourn the tragic death, on 25 January 2012, of Asha Barron. Asha was an undergraduate in the Department from 2007 until 2009. In 2010 she did Honours in Philosophy, for which she obtained a First Class Pass. At the time of her death she was a Masters student in Philosophy at St Andrews University in Scotland. 

At a memorial event in Cape Town, Dr Greg Fried, her former supervisor, delivered a eulogy.

Mashuq Ally (1977)

Currently Associate Professor in Philosophy at UNISA.

Currently Head of Middle School, Moriah College, Sydney, Australia.

Joseph Whitaker (2002)
Currently candidate attorney at Louis Herbert Attorneys.

Gabriel Cross (2003)
MSc from Edinburgh University, 2004; LLB, UCT, 2007. 
Currently advocate at Johannesburg Bar - Society of Advocates.

Jane Davidson (2003)
MSc in Global Politics from Birkbeck, University of London, 2007. 
Currently a full time mum.

Andrew Fisher (2006)
Currently working as a candidate attorney at Bowman Gilfillan, Cape Town.

Anthony Cawood (2008)
Currently completing a PhD in Education at UCT while starting up a Beer Brewing supply company called Beerguevara. 

Frances Maughan-Brown (2008)
Currently working on her PhD in Continental Philosophy at Boston College, USA.

Paul Smit (2008)
Currently working as an e-Learning developer in Cape Town.

Jessica Blignaut (2008)
Currently completing legal articles at Bowman Gilfillan (JHB) after studying an LLM in Biotechnology, Ethics and Law at UCT.

Lydia du Bois (2008)
Currently a PhD student in the Philosophy Department, University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Julian Jonker (2009)
Currently a PhD student in the Philosophy Department, University of California, Berkeley.

Douglas Ainslie (2009)
Currently a Law Clerk in the Chambers of Justice Nkabinde.

Meghan Finn (2010)
Currently a BCL student at Oxford University.

Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge (2010)
Has recently established a not for profit organisation to advocate for law reform to end prostitution and sex trafficking.

Bernard Holiday (1973)
(Thesis title: Privacy and Sensation in the later Philosophy of Wittgenstein)
PGCE from Leeds University, 1977.
Junior Lecturer in Philosophy, UCT, 1972. Lecturer in Philosophy, University of Natal, 1973-4.
Subsequently a secondary school teacher and Head of the English Department at St George’s College, Harare, then Downside School, Somerset (UK) and finally at Sherborne School, Dorset (UK).

David Theo Goldberg (1978)
PhD from City University of New York
Currently Director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute, Professor of Comparative Literature, and Professor of Criminology, Law and Society, UC Irvine. 

Francis Williamson (1988)
Currently Lecturer in Philosophy, Rhodes University.

Colin Lumb (1997)
Currently farming with his wife, Bronwyn (and their sons, Cole and Berkeley) near Calitzdorp. Their farm has a guesthouse, “The Old School House”, details of which can be found here: 

Steven Kuo (2003)
Currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Political Studies Department, University of the Western Cape, South Africa. 

Monique Whitaker (2006)
Currently in the Philosophy PhD programme at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Main areas of interest are in the philosophy of language, in reference, meaning and pragmatics; and in the philosophy of mind, in belief attribution and consciousness.

Dean Chapman (2006)
Currently Lecturer in Philosophy at UCT. 

Ryan Nefdt (2010)
Currently a PhD student in Philosophy at the University of St Andrews and Stirling, after completing an MSc in Logic and Linguistics at the Institute of Logic, Language and Computation at the University of Amsterdam.

Jenni Sinclaire (2012)
Currently working as a proof-reader for a digital marketing company in London.

Scott Gallagher (2013)
Currently working for an organization that helps ex-offenders get employment.

Tim Allen (2013)
Founded and running a non-profit to prepare learners from under-resourced high schools in Cape Town for university.
